Celestine Obiakor – Owu Mbiala

Celestine Obiakor & His Entertainment Group was a prominent Nigerian highlife band during the 1960s and 1970s, led by the legendary Igbo highlife vocalist Celestine Obiakor, also known as Celestine Ukwu. Among their many releases, “Owu Mbiala” stands out as one of the most sought-after and successful tracks.

“Owu Mbiala” captures the essence of Ukwu’s musical genius, with its smooth blend of traditional highlife rhythms and modern sensibilities. This song, like many others by Obiakor, reflects his deep understanding of life and the human experience, conveyed through poignant lyrics and melodious instrumentation.

Celestine Ukwu was a guitarist and vocalist on the verge of national breakthrough with his band the Music Royals when the Nigerian civil war brought touring and recording to a standstill. However, he re-emerged in 1970 with Philosopher’s Stone, playing a relaxed and sensuous form of highlife that effectively incorporated pedal steel guitar into its arrangements—a novelty later adopted by fellow Nigerian juju star King Sunny Ade.

Ukwu’s biggest hit was the single “Money Palaver” in 1976, from the album “Igede Fantasia.” Unfortunately, his untimely death later that year meant his potential was never fully realized. Nevertheless, “Owu Mbiala” remains a testament to his enduring legacy and his ability to craft songs that resonate deeply with listeners.

The charm of “Owu Mbiala” lies in its rich harmonies, soulful vocals, and the timeless wisdom embedded in its lyrics, making it a classic that continues to captivate fans of Igbo highlife music.
